Sunday Roast in Windermere: The Easy Breeze Guide
Right, let's clear something up before we start, because I know someone's going to say it in the comments: yes, The Easy Breeze is technically in Bowness. But we're Bowness-on-Windermere, which I'm choosing to interpret as full permission to be on this list. It's basically the same postcode. Don't @ me.
Anyway. Windermere the town, not the lake - keep up, has quietly built itself a proper little Sunday roast scene, and most people walking straight past it towards the water don't have a clue. So here's where to go, whether you're staying up the hill or you've wandered up from the lakeshore looking for something different.
The Lamplighter Dining Rooms
If you want a Sunday roast that takes itself seriously in the best possible way, this is it. High ceilings, long tables, Cumbrian beef and lamb carved at the table like it's a small event - because honestly, it kind of is. Even The Guardian's Jay Rayner had nice things to say about it, so it's not just us being nice about the neighbours.
Storrs Hall
Georgian mansion, right on the shore, the kind of place that makes you sit up a bit straighter when you walk in. The three-course roast leans on dry-aged Cumbrian beef and comes with the sort of view that makes you forget you're eating lunch in a hotel dining room. Good one for when someone's celebrating something and you want to look like you've made an effort.
Hillthwaite
Up above the town with proper panoramic views across to the fells, Hillthwaite does a Sunday roast with genuinely no fuss about it - just well-cooked, well-sourced food and a room that doesn't rush you. A solid, relaxed pick if the grander spots feel like a bit much for a Sunday.
Langdale Chase
A Victorian mansion right on the water with a 2 Rosette kitchen behind it, doing elevated versions of the classics without losing the plot on what a roast is actually meant to feel like. Worth the slightly longer drive out of town if you fancy making a proper afternoon of it.
The Easy Breeze
And then, obviously, there's us - five minutes down the hill in Bowness. Lakeland lamb, Cumbrian beef, pork belly with crackling that actually cracks, and a vegetarian roast that isn't just an apology on a plate. Stick around and live music kicks off in the evening, so Sunday lunch has a habit of turning into Sunday, full stop. We might be biased, but we're also right.
The bottom line
Windermere's roast game is better than most people realise - you don't need to fight the Bowness crowds every Sunday to eat well round here. But if your Sunday's got no plans of ending politely at 3pm, you know where the bar is.
