The Lake District isn’t just famous for its stunning fells and sparkling lakes- it’s also home to some of the best restaurants in the UK. From cosy pubs in Windermere to Michelin-star dining in Ambleside, this corner of Cumbria is a true foodie paradise.

Whether you’re craving locally sourced fine dining or hearty post-hike comfort food, there’s something here for every taste and budget. As a local who’s lived here for over 25 years, I’ve rounded up my top picks- the real gems you need to try when visiting the Lake District.

Top Restaurants in the Lake District (No Particular Order)

1. The Tilly, Windermere

A cosy, family-owned spot serving hearty pub grub that won’t drain your wallet (i.e. this is the place to go for fish & chips!). Perfect after a hike up School Knott, The Tilly is where locals go for comfort food, cold pints, and good conversation.

2. San Pietro, Windermere

A long-standing family restaurant with a well-earned reputation for quality. Run by the highly respected chef with decades of experience cooking for superstars whilst travelling the world, Jason Turner and his amazing wife, Yui. Expect homemade pasta, locally sourced ingredients, and a warm Italian welcome. It’s one of Windermere’s most beloved institutions.

3. Mizumi, Bowness-on-Windermere

This hidden gem serves up some of the best Asian fusion in the Lakes. Think sushi, small plates, and bao buns- all beautifully presented in a cool, understated setting. A bit of a secret… but not for long.

4. The Easy Breeze, Bowness-on-Windermere

Our own little slice of relaxed perfection. Live music, street food, and wood-fired pizzas- it’s the kind of place where you can rock up in your walking boots or dressed to the nines. Chilled vibes, great drinks, and the perfect evening hangout. Learn more about the story behind the Breeze.
